Lift-and-Shift migration to AWS

A large multi-national contract food service company engaged Slalom to help migrate their major production workloads running on VMware as well as supporting infrastructure from their on-prem data centres into AWS.

The Slalom team worked closely with our client's infrastructure and application teams to deliver a lift-and-shift migration. This required a discovery phase to collect compute, storage, and network information, several app owner interviews to determine dependencies and requirements for the applications and partnering with the client to support several weekend migration waves. An AWS supported replication tool was leveraged to prepare for and implement the migration.

As a result, in 7 months we were able to migrate over 700 servers and multiple revenue-sensitive workloads into AWS with minimal service disruption, identified over 100 servers to decommission, and provided significant cost savings associated with licensing by leveraging dedicated hosts for SQL Server Enterprise.

Get started with a VMware Migration pre-assessment workshop

Slalom can help customers navigate VMware's new subscription licensing models and the end of perpetual licensing sales by breaking down the increased cost and explaining why a move to AWS can be beneficial.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Cost Assessment from perpetual to subscription-based licensing
  • What to expect from a cost breakdown
  • Why a move to AWS could be the right decision
