A day "on" for our community.
Slalom believes that to be part of the fabric of our Chicago community, we must support the people and organizations in the city where we live and work. On January 18, 2021, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we committed to volunteering our time and talents through “a day on, not a day off,” to support the following Chicago organizations.
We’re proud to work alongside these nonprofits in supporting their impactful causes:
Pangea ▪ March of Dimes ▪ Sarah's Circle ▪ Make-A-Wish Illinois ▪ Lurie Children's Hospital ▪ Breakthrough ▪ Lincoln Park Community Services ▪ Chicago House ▪ Urban Initiatives ▪ Camden's Comfort Project ▪ Cara ▪ Thresholds ▪ Back 2 School Illinois ▪ Horizons for Youth

Since 2010, Pangea has been closing the gap on childhood literacy in communities across Uganda through sustainable, evidence-driven learning programs. In 2017, Pangea Publishing launched to develop learning resources that are culturally and linguistically relevant to young-language learners in underserved communities across East Africa. Today, Pangea Publishing is global with over 60 dynamic, multi-cultural storybooks published in 15 languages, and shared with more than 100,000 readers across 50 countries. Pangea leverages all facets of the publication process from design to distribution to advance their mission of equitable access, community enrichment, and representation.
March of Dimes is a national nonprofit organization leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies with a goal to end preventable maternal health risks, end preventable preterm birth and infant mortality, and close the health equity gap. We envision a world where every mom and baby is healthy regardless of wealth, race or geography. For more information on how to get involved in Illinois, please contact Jeanette Igwe, Director of Volunteer & Corporate Engagement at jigwe@marchofdimes.org.
Sarah's Circle is a non-profit organization with a mission of serving women who are homelessness or in need of a safe space. Located in Chicago's Uptown community, Sarah's Circle has provided support for thousands of women since 1979.
Hope is essential. And for the critically ill children Make-A-Wish Illinois services, that hope is more important than ever. As current global health issues have required many wishes to be paused until it is safe for them to be granted, these children face increased fear, uncertainty, and isolation. Make-A-Wish is still granting wishes when they can be done so safely and is committed to providing a wish journey that is still one of hope, anticipation, and joy.
Childhood is a season of life where exploration, growth and creativity are necessary for self-development and social inclusion. Lurie Children’s integrates play, education and creativity for patients and siblings at the main hospital and our outpatient locations. Our Children's Services Team provides a sense of normalcy and ensures that patients and their families are supported both mentally and emotionally. The team includes Art Therapists, Activity Coordinators, Music Therapists, Education Team and Child Life Specialists. Together with the patient’s medical team, our Children's Services team addresses the needs of the whole family for the best possible patient experience.
Breakthrough is a nonprofit organization that partners with those affected by poverty to build connections, develop skills, and open doors of opportunity. With a hyper-local, 40-block focus, Breakthrough provides a myriad of services focused on a profoundly simple formula: people first.
Lincoln Park Community Services brings communities together to empower individuals facing homelessness and poverty to secure stable housing and make sustainable life changes. LPCS serves more than 500 individuals each year through Interim Housing Shelters, Supportive Housing, Street-Based Outreach, and a Graduate Community. We are supported by an extraordinary community of 1,800 active volunteers.
Chicago House supports individuals and families impacted by HIV/AIDS and the broader LGBTQ+ community with housing, health, and employment services. Founded in 1985 as a housing and hospice care facility, Chicago House’s services have expanded to address the needs of individuals living long and healthy lives with HIV while proactively preventing new HIV cases.
Urban Initiatives works to strengthen Chicago's future by building an enduring team of youth, families, schools, and communities. They use structured, play-based programming to empower Chicago's youth to achieve academic success, develop social-emotional skills, and build social capital.
Every day, thousands of babies are born prematurely and spend their first days, weeks, or months in a hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The mission of Camden’s Comfort Project is to inspire hope, courage, and strength to the families navigating their way through life and loss in neonatal intensive care. They do this by partnering with groups and volunteers to create hand-made blankets as gifts of comfort for families during this time of need. Receiving a cozy blanket can be so meaningful, and a lasting gift that can be treasured for years to come.
Since 1991, Cara has helped people affected by poverty (and often the challenges of recovery, domestic violence, episodic homelessness, and incarceration) to get and keep quality jobs and, more importantly, rebuild hope, self-esteem and opportunity for themselves and their families in the process.
Thresholds is fighting to transform the lives of people living with mental illnesses and substance use conditions. Founded in 1959, Thresholds provides healthcare, housing, and hope for thousands of persons with mental illnesses and substance use conditions in Illinois each year. Through care, employment, advocacy, and housing, Thresholds assists and inspires people with mental illnesses to reclaim their lives.
Back 2 School’s mission is to create and support educational opportunities that enrich the lives of Illinois children. The organization has successfully been providing Illinois families with Back 2 School kits, filled with the core supplies they need to succeed in the classroom.
